Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado released a statement on X thanking President Donald Trump for nabbing socialist dictator Nicolas Maduro and hauling him out of the country.
Machado posted a video of thousands of Venezuelans celebrating Maduro’s ouster.
Machado and her fellow candidate Edmundo González reportedly won the 2024 presidential election, but Maduro ignored their victory and remained in power, declaring himself the winner.
“Today we are prepared to enforce our mandate and take power,” Machado had stated on Saturday.
However, President Trump said he feared Machado “doesn’t have the support within or the respect within the country” to become its next leader, and indicated he would be working with Maduro’s vice president Delcy Rodriguqz, who is currently in power.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio further explained on Sunday that the U.S. does not recognize Rodriguez as a legitimate leader, and called for new elections to determine Venezuela’s next president.
Machado released the following statement Monday:
The brave people of Venezuela took to the streets in 30 countries and 130 cities around the world to celebrate a huge step that marks the inevitability and imminence of the transition in Venezuela.
We Venezuelans thank President Donald Trump (@POTUS) and his administration for their firmness and determination in upholding the law. Venezuela will be the main ally of the United States in matters of security, energy, democracy, and human rights.
The freedom of Venezuela is near, and soon we will celebrate on our land. We will shout, pray, and embrace as a family, because our children will return home.
