Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a somewhat groveling statement on social media Friday afternoon, after he got into a heated discussion with President Trump in the Oval Office, and ended up being kicked out of the White House.
Zelenskyy had come to the White House and was expected to sign an agreement that would give the U.S. access to Ukraine’s critical minerals supply, to help repay the U.S. for providing financial support, ahead of a pending peace deal with Russia.
However, during an Oval Office meeting, with the media all still present, Zelenskyy became defiant, rude and disrespectful, talking over President Trump and Vice President Vance.
Zelenskyy was supposed to stay for lunch, followed by a joint press conference with Trump, but instead, he was shown the door and sent on his way.
“He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace,” President Trump declared in a statement.
Zelenskyy later posted the following statement on X:
“Thank you America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit. Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that.”

Ahead of the Oval Office meeting with President Trump, Zelenskyy had participated in a meeting with a bipartisan group of senators to discuss continued U.S. assistance for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy’s team had posted a video from that event, along with the following statement:
An important visit to the United States. In Washington, I met with a bipartisan delegation from the U.S. Senate.
Our discussions focused on the continued military assistance for Ukraine, relevant legislative initiatives, my meeting with President Trump, efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace, our vision for ending the war, and the importance of robust security guarantees.
We take pride in having strategic partners and friends like the United States. We are grateful for the unwavering bicameral and bipartisan support for Ukraine throughout all three years of Russia’s full-scale aggression.

CNN’s Katilan Collins posted a photo of the Ukrainian ambassador with her head in the hands as the fireworks were going off inside the Oval Office.

Collins explained how it all ended up:
Here’s what happened inside the White House after the Oval Office shouting match: Trump huddled with his key advisers immediately afterward inside the Oval.
According to a White House official, Trump consulted Vance, Rubio, Bessent, etc. That was when Trump decided that Zelensky was “not in a place to negotiate.” He directed Secretary Rubio and his national security adviser Mike Waltz to deliver the message: it was time for Zelensky to leave.
The Ukrainians were holding nearby in a separate room. (That’s standard for foreign leader visits.) Typically they reconvene for lunch. But the Ukrainians would not be dining at the White House. As the prepared food sat nearby on carts in a hallway, the Ukrainians were instructed to leave.
The White House official said the Ukrainians wanted to continue the talks. But they were told no. Zelensky left shortly thereafter.
