From the New York Post: New York Rep. Elise Stefanik has accepted President-elect Donald Trump’s offer to be his enforcer as United Nations ambassador, The Post can reveal.

The 40-year-old upstate Republican, who helped force out two Ivy League presidents with her sharp questioning on campus antisemitism, will the lead Trump’s “America first” and pro-Israel message in Turtle Bay.

“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump, 78, said in a statement to The Post Sunday night.

Stefanik, the No. 4 House Republican, has been a close Trump ally, including serving on his ceremonial defense team in 2020 during his first impeachment trial for pressuring Ukraine to investigate alleged Biden family corruption.

Stefanik released the following statement, accepting the nomination:

“I am truly honored to earn President Trump’s nomination to serve in his Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. During my conversation with President Trump, I shared how deeply humbled I am to accept his nomination and that I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the United States Senate.

“President Trump’s historic landslide election has given hope to the American people and is a reminder that brighter days are ahead — both at home and abroad. America continues to be the beacon of the world, but we expect and must demand that our friends and allies be strong partners in the peace we seek.

“The work ahead is immense as we see antisemitism skyrocketing coupled with four years of catastrophically weak U.S. leadership that significantly weakened our national security and diminished our standing in the eyes of both allies and adversaries. I stand ready to advance President Donald J. Trump’s restoration of America First peace through strength leadership on the world stage on Day One at the United Nations.”

Stefanik represents New York’s 21st congressional district in Upstate New York, which is a reliably conservative area. She just won re-election to the seat with 62% of the vote, so another Republican would be likely to win it if she should vacate the seat.

Stefanik would not be confirmed for her new position until after Trump’s inauguration in January.  She would then have to vacate her congressional seat.

By state law, within 10 days of the seat becoming vacant, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul will then have to set a date for a special election to be held, which must be within 90 days of the seat becoming vacant.

The NY Post explains that the Republican nominee in the special election will be chosen by county GOP chairs rather than by a primary.

Congratulations are pouring in for Stefanik:

Rep Steve Scalise (R-La.) wrote, “President Trump has made a fantastic choice with Conference Chair Elise Stefanik for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. I will miss Elise, who has become a dear friend in the House as well as a respected leader as our Republican Conference Chair. She is extremely qualified for this new role in public service, and the House’s loss will be a huge gain for the Trump Administration and the country. There is nobody better to represent President Trump’s foreign policy and America’s values at the United Nations than Elise Stefanik.”

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders wrote, “Congratulations to my friend @EliseStefanik! Elise has been a strong voice for our allies abroad and especially Israel. I know she will champion President Trump’s policies and represent America well on the global stage.”

Former State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus wrote, “A very big congratulations to my friend @EliseStefanik on being asked to serve as our next ambassador to the United Nations!! I know she’ll do an amazing job representing our country, fighting waste and corruption, and standing up for Israel!”
