Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and former presidential candidate Nikki Haley has weighed in on the huge debate on X over foreign workers.

The huge discussion, which is a good two-hour read on X if a person follows every thread, involves tech companies importing foreign workers from India, along with concerns about the many tech CEOs flocking to Trump who never supported him before.

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who Trump has appointed to lead the newly-formed Department of Government Efficiency cost-cutting agency, both became immersed in the online debate.

Ramaswamy argued that American culture is partly to blame for why companies want foreign workers.  He wrote, in part:

The reason top tech companies often hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over “native” Americans isn’t because of an innate American IQ deficit (a lazy & wrong explanation). A key part of it comes down to the c-word: culture. Tough questions demand tough answers & if we’re really serious about fixing the problem, we have to confront the TRUTH:

Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn’t start in college, it starts YOUNG. A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.

Haley fired back at Ramaswamy, “There is nothing wrong with American workers or American culture. All you have to do is look at the border and see how many want what we have. We should be investing and prioritizing in Americans, not foreign workers.”

Below are just some of the responses pouring in…

Some social media commenters argued Ramswamy and Haley were both right. One user wrote:

It used to be that kids’ heroes were firemen, astronauts, and others making a positive impact on life.

Now, they’re all about celebrities, sports figures, and social media influencers.

Academic challenges & success were lauded by society.

Now, “emotional skills” are highly valued.

Patriotism was part of being an American. Now, people are angry about the country, feeling guilty about their ancestor’s part, or confused over whether it’s ok to be proud of one’s country.

American culture HAS changed.

Ramaswamy later clarified that he supports getting rid of the visa lottery.

“I’ve long said the current H-1B system is badly broken & needs to be gutted. It shouldn’t use a lottery, it should be based on pure MERIT. It shouldn’t tether workers to just one corporation. Same principles I favor today,” he wrote.
