As the feud between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump has escalated Thursday over the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, it is likely to spill over and cause rifts inside the Republican world, as those who supported both men will now be forced to choose which side to take.
Musk joined Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and a few other Republicans, who voiced their opposition to the massive spending bill, saying it will only increase the deficit and contains to much ‘pork.’ The bill had passed in the House and is now being considered in the U.S. Senate. President Trump is pushing for the bill to be passed, while Musk spoke out this week, demanding the bill be ‘killed.’
Amid all the chaos, social media posts, and Trump’s comments to reporters in the Oval Office Thursday, Musk has been pointing to Twitter posts by Trump where he had slammed Republicans for increasing the debt ceiling.
Now Musk is calling out multiple Republican congressman for their previous statements as well.
On March 5, 2023, House Speaker Mike Johnson had written, “The federal debt has just topped $31.4 trillion, and the Congressional Budget Office now estimates federal spending for fiscal year 2023 will total $6.221 trillion—or more than $197,000 per second! This is not sustainable!”
“Where is the Mike Johnson of 2023!?” Musk asked.

On Feb. 9, 2018, Johnson wrote, “At some point, Congress has to stop this endless cycle of out-of-control deficit spending.”
“I super agree with this guy 👇” Musk wrote.

In September 2020, Sen. John Thune (now the Senate Majority Leader) said, “Our nation is deeply, deeply in debt right now. Next year our country will owe more than we produce for the first time since the end of World War II. That’s a very bad place to be.”
“Where is the John Thune of 2020??” Musk asked.

Journalist Laura Loomer weighed in: “It’s heating up. Will be interesting to see what Republican lawmakers do now. I know law makers who are asking if they should side with President Trump or Elon. I’ve been on the hill all day and it’s all anyone is talking about. The most powerful man in the world vs the richest man in the world.”
Musk replied, “Oh and some food for thought as they ponder this question: Trump has 3.5 years left as President, but I will be around for 40+ years…”

Musk has also drawn attention to an old video of his own comments. On Thursday, Trump said, “Elon’s upset because we took the EV mandate tax credit away…. He knew everything about it. He had no problem with it. All of a sudden he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out that we’re going to have to cut the EV mandate [tax credit], because that’s billions and billions of dollars, and it really is unfair.”
Musk pointed to his comments from an interview with the Wall Street Journal in December 2021, when he said, “We don’t need the $7,500 [EV] tax credit. Honestly, I would just cancel this whole [infrastructure] bill. Don’t pass it. That’s my recommendation.”
