From ABC News: Authorities in Michigan say a man entered a Walmart in Traverse City on Saturday afternoon armed with a folding knife and stabbed 11 people before being taken into custody.
The attack began unfolding at 4:43 p.m., the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office said in a statement posted online.
The victims were being treated at the Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. As of Saturday evening, six of the victims were in critical condition and five were in serious condition, the hospital said in an update online.
At a news conference Saturday evening, Grand Traverse Sheriff Michael Shea said the victims include six males and five females. Authorities have not yet provided the ages of any of the victims.
Sheriff Shea would not release the suspect’s name in the news conference Saturday evening, but said he was a 42-year-old man. When asked about a motive, the sheriff carefully guarded his words, saying, “Based on the information we have at this time, it appears that these were random acts, that there was no… the victims were not pre-determined.”
In other words, the attacker simply started stabbing people. The sheriff said the attacker used “a standard folding-knife style weapon.”
When a reporter asked about where the suspect is from, or about him being a Michigan resident, the sheriff evasively said, “At this time I’d rather not comment.”
The suspect was apprehended by other Walmart shoppers out in the parking lot after the stabbing attacks.
A video is circulating on social media of the moment several men were yelling at the suspect to drop the knife and eventually took him down, holding him until police arrived. CLICK HERE to watch the video on X.
According to a screenshot of a Facebook post, the two men who apprehended the suspect were both U.S. Marine veterans. One was a Black man and the other a White man named Matthew.
Matthew’s wife wrote that her husband “grabbed a nearby shopping cart and rammed it straight into the achilles tendon of the assailant, causing him to fall forward.”
“He had the assistance of another citizen, who just so happened to be a arine veteran as well, and held the attacker at gunpoint until he dropped the knife. That’s when multiple people tackled him until PD arrived… and took him into custody,” she wrote.

On 7-26-25 at 4:43 pm, a 42 year old male subject, acting alone, entered Walmart in Garfield Township and used a folding knife to stab eleven people of unknown ages. A Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Deputy was on scene within minutes and took the man into custody. Citizens in Walmart also assisted in the apprehension and treatment of victims.
All victims are being treated for injuries at Munson Medical Center, many in serious or critical condition. Our Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. We will update when additional information is available.
