Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., resigned from the House on Wednesday after being selected by President-elect Trump to serve as Attorney General, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., announced.

“I think out of deference to us, he issued his resignation letter effective immediately,” Johnson said. “That caught us by surprise a little bit. But I asked him what the reasoning was, and he said, well, you can’t have too many absences.”

Speaker Mike Johnson noted that Florida law allows the governor about eight weeks to fill a House vacancy, potentially seating a replacement by Jan. 3. Johnson added that he’s already in touch with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Trump announced Wednesday on Truth Social his intent to nominate Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida as U.S. attorney general. He wrote that Gaetz “has distinguished himself in Congress through his focus on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice.”

Gaetz replied on X, “It will be an honor to serve as President Trump’s Attorney General!”
