UPDATE: DHS Plans to Rearrest and Deport Columbia Encampment Leader Mahmoud Khalil

From the Washington Free Beacon: DHS plans to rearrest Columbia University encampment leader Mahmoud Khalil and deport him to Algeria, DHS assistant secretary for public affairs Tricia McLaughlin said on Wednesday.

“Are there plans now to rearrest [Khalil] and continue with deportation proceedings?” NewsNation host Katie Pavlich asked McLaughlin.

“There are,” McLaughlin replied. “And it looks like he’ll go to Algeria. That’s what the thought is right now.”

“It’s a reminder for those who are in this country on a visa or on a green card,” she added. “You are a guest in this country. Act like it. It is a privilege, not a right, to be in this country to live or to study. And if you’re pushing propaganda that relishes the killings of Americans or promotes terrorists, door’s that way.”

Khalil, a Palestinian originally from Syria, and a former Columbia graduate student, is in the U.S. legally. However, he played a major role in organizing the 2024 anti-Israel, pro-Hamas protests on the college campus and through the streets of New York that often turned violent.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio revoked Khalil’s green card in March 2025. He was  arrested on March 8 at his residence in Manhattan, and put into deportation proceedings. Khalil was held in detention in Louisiana for three months, but in June, U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz, a Biden appointee in New Jersey, blocked the Trump administration from deporting him, then ordered him released.

Last week, in a 2-1 decision, a three-judge panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the Trump administration and ruled that Farbiarz lacked “subject-matter jurisdiction” under federal immigration law to halt the effort to deport Khalil.

NYC Democrat Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani pitched a fit over the news that Khalil is to be deported.

“Mahmoud Khalil is a New Yorker, he should remain in New York City,” the mayor fumed. “He deserves to be in this city just like any other New Yorker.”

Brandon Tatum, a former police officer, fired back, “Bruh, he’s not even an American, let alone a New Yorker… and now he’s getting DEPORTED. Stay mad.”
