From the New York Times: Investigators responding to arson fires at two ballot boxes in the Pacific Northwest this week found devices at both scenes marked with the words “Free Gaza,” according to two law enforcement officials.
Investigators are trying to determine if the perpetrator was actually a pro-Palestinian activist or someone using that prominent cause to sow discord, one of the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. But the message has added a heightened layer of political sensitivity to a closely watched investigation in the final days of a tense presidential election.
The fires both occurred early Monday within a short time of each other in Portland, Ore., and just across the state line in Vancouver, Wash.
The “Free Gaza” message appeared not only on the two devices, which were discovered on Monday, but also on a device found at a third ballot box this month in Vancouver, according to the law enforcement officials. That device also had the words “Free Palestine” on it.
Officials indicated they believe the same person is responsible for all three incidents.
The Portland Police provided a description of the suspect in a press release on Wednesday:
The Portland Police Bureau is asking for the public’s help in locating the suspect and suspect vehicle involved in intentionally setting fires at ballot boxes in Southeast Portland and Vancouver.
PPB is providing a description of the suspect and an updated description of the suspect vehicle.
Suspect: Caucasian male, 30-40 years of age, very short hair or balding, thin to medium build, thin face, wearing a dark shirt, highly knowledgeable in both metal fabrication and welding.
Suspect vehicle: most likely a 2001-2004 Volvo S60, more matte in color than a standard shiny finish in places, tan or light gray interior, after-market grill with Volvo emblem missing, dark wheels, unpainted body trim, no front license plate.
Investigators believe it is possible the suspect intends to continue these targeted attacks.
Crime Stoppers of Oregon is offering a $2,500 cash reward for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect, the press release also stated.

KGWNews reporter Evan Watson shared the following details:
- Clark County auditor Greg Kimsey says 488 ballots were damaged in the fire.
- 345 voters have already asked for replacements.
- Elections staff identified 143 other damaged ballots, mailing replacements to voters tomorrow.
- At least 6 ballots were unidentifiable.
Portland Police are now saying the suspect in the ballot box fires is a white male roughly 30-40 years old.
“We believe this suspect has a wealth of experience in metal fabrication,” PPB spokesman said. “It’s very possible the suspect continues targeted attacks across the area.”
