The victim count and death toll has risen after the shocking attack on a Christmas market in Germany on Friday. At least 5 deaths have been confirmed, and the number of people injured has risen to 200.
From CBS News: Germans on Saturday mourned the death of at least five people – including a 9-year-old – who were killed, and at least 200 others who were injured after a Saudi doctor intentionally drove into a busy Christmas market in Magdeburg on Friday.
The driver of the car – a 50-year-old man who arrived in Germany in 2006 – was arrested and taken into custody for questioning, authorities said. Magdeburg police said their current assumption is that the man, who had indefinite permission to stay and work in the country, was a “lone perpetrator.”
Prosecutor Horst Nopens said the suspect is under investigation on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and bodily harm. He is currently being questioned. The prosecutor says they’re still working to clarify the motive but said it’s linked to “dissatisfaction with the treatment of refugees from Saudi Arabia and how they’ve been treated in Germany,” CBS News partner BBC reported.

Although the Magdeburg Police has not publicly announced the suspect’s name, he has been identified as 50-year-old Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a psychiatry and psychotherapy specialist who described himself as a former Muslim.
Al-Abdulmohsen’s X account is filled with posts warning about the Islamic culture and blasting the German government for not doing enough to stop the “Islamization of Europe.” He also has stated that he is an activist who seeks to help other former Muslims, especially women, to escape Saudi Arabia.
Al-Abdulmohsen also repeatedly voiced support for the conservative Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which is opposed to the flood of migrants that have invaded their country and changed its culture.
Peter Neumann, a prominent German terrorism expert, admitted he has never seen a case like this. “The more that comes out about Taleb A., the less sure I am that this was an Islamist attack. His Twitter profile suggests the opposite,” he wrote on X.
“After 25 years in this “business” you think nothing could surprise you anymore. But a 50-year-old Saudi ex-Muslim who lives in East Germany, loves the AfD and wants to punish Germany for its tolerance towards Islamists – that really wasn’t on my radar,” Neumann added.

Liberals and the mainstream media label the AfD as “far-right” and “right-wing,” and are now using the attack to paint the conservative party as a threat. However, AfD supporters have emphatically condemned the attack as well, and are slamming the liberal ruling party for not deporting Al-Abdulmohsen long ago.
CNN reported that authorities in Saudi Arabia had warned German intelligence officials about Al-Abdulmohsen at least three times, going back to 2007, but the warnings were all ignored. CNN wrote:
Saudi Arabia considers him a fugitive and requested his extradition from Germany between 2007 and 2008, the source said, adding that German authorities refused, citing concerns for the man’s safety should he return.
Popularity of the conservative AfD party in Germany is rising, and Friday’s attack has ignited their opposition to the massive immigration into their country even more – even while the left tries to point the finger at the AfD.

German author Birgit Kelle wrote, “It still needs to be explained why a Saudi Arabian, alleged “ex-Muslim” and atheist would attack a Christian Christmas market with the aim of killing as many German citizens as possible. If he hates Islam, wouldn’t that be the logical first target?”
“It also needs to be explained why Taleb A., although he was repeatedly reported to the police by internet users for his public announcements of revenge and violence, his hatred of the German state and the police, was nevertheless classified as harmless by the German security authorities in 2023 and was even able to continue working as a psychologist in the penal system. The result is an overwhelmed security apparatus that cannot keep an eye on foreigners in the country and cannot even follow up on concrete announcements of violence, but at the same time can deal intensively with legitimate criticism of the government by citizens, including criminal prosecution.”

Many of Al-Abdulmohsen’s social media posts are being shared online, including one from November 2023 in which he writes, “We will return Hamas to Gaza and if you like we can bring Hamas to your home so you can taste it.”
