President Trump will visit South Korea from Oct. 29–30, the country’s national security adviser said Thursday.
The visit comes just before South Korea hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit on Oct. 31.
U.S. officials say President Trump may meet Chinese President Xi Jinping during the APEC forum, which runs through November 1. Seoul also noted that a U.S.–North Korea meeting on the sidelines “cannot be ruled out.”
South Korean media reported that President Trump is expected to stay in Gyeongju and meet with President Lee Jae Myung during his visit.
Last week, Trump threatened to cancel his planned APEC meeting with Xi Jinping after Beijing imposed export restrictions on rare-earth technologies. However, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin later said the meeting would proceed.
Trump has also expressed interest in meeting Kim Jong-un again, with Pyongyang signaling that Kim is open to talks under certain conditions. The two met three times during Trump’s first term but failed to reach a lasting nuclear agreement.
