UNCONVENTIONAL CONVENTION: Trump suggests GOP national convention before midterms

1

President Trump on Thursday urged Republicans to hold a national convention ahead of the 2026 midterms, departing from the tradition of waiting until the presidential election year.

The president wrote the following on Truth Social:

The Republican Party is doing really well. Millions of people have joined us in our quest to MAKE AMERICA, GREAT AGAIN. We won every aspect of the Presidential Election and, based on the great success we are having, are poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS. We have raised far more money than the Democrats, and are having a great time fixing all of the Country Destroying mistakes made by the Biden Administration, and watching the USA heal and prosper. The results are incredible, a record pace!!! In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!! DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The first U.S. national political convention was held in 1831 by the Anti-Masonic Party in Baltimore. Democrats followed in 1832, nominating Andrew Jackson, and the Whigs held their first in 1839. Republicans launched their first convention in 1856, backing explorer John Fremont. Since then, both major parties have held conventions every four years without interruption.

Holding a national political convention every two years could boost fundraising and provide the party with more opportunities to update its platform in line with current events and shifting public opinion.
