U.S. Launches Military Command in Tokyo to Counter China

The U.S. is set to create a new military command in Japan to enhance security partnerships as Washington DC seeks to fortify its Asian allies amid China’s growing military presence, according to senior officials from both countries on Sunday.

This new American command, initially headed by a three-star general, will oversee military operations in collaboration with Japanese forces, organize joint drills, and contribute to Japan’s defense in case of conflict.

This development will mark the first time American military operations are directed from a command based on Japanese soil, eliminating the need for U.S. forces in Japan to await orders from the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, which is situated 3,500 miles away in Hawaii.

The initiative aims to align with Japan’s efforts to enhance its military capabilities, including the establishment of a new joint military command that Japanese officials plan to activate early next year.
