Following the deadly shooting of two National Guard members by an Afghan refugee in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, the Trump administration has made several announcements to crack down on the refugee and immigration system.
Nearly every time President Trump announces any policies changes to limit or restrict legal or illegal immigration, Democrats challenge it with a lawsuit.
Appearing to anticipate another legal challenge from the Democrats, President Trump posted an excerpt from the law that confirms his authority to make decisions on limiting immigration into the United States.
President Trump wrote:
Immigration and Nationality Act, Section 212(f):
“Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”
On Friday, the U.S. State Department announced, “The Department of State has IMMEDIATELY paused visa issuance for individuals traveling on Afghan passports. The Department is taking all necessary steps to protect US national security and public safety.”
And the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Department announced, “USCIS has halted all asylum decisions until we can ensure that every alien is vetted and screened to the maximum degree possible. The safety of the American people always comes first.”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Friday, “We are working to cut off federal benefits to illegal aliens and preserve them for U.S. citizens.”
DHS announced on Saturday, “Just one day before the Terrorist attack against our @NationalGuard, another Afghan national who was paroled into the United States under Biden’s Operation Allies Welcome was arrested for threatening to blow up a building in Fort Worth.”
