President Donald Trump continues to point out that Republicans have a very simple way to end the government shutdown: terminate the filibuster, which is a longstanding rule in the Senate that prevents many bills from passing unless 60 senators in the 100-member chamber support it. Republicans currently have a 52-seat majority, but they are prevented from passing much legislation unless 8 Democrats cross the aisle to support them.
Many Republicans don’t want to end the filibuster, as it allows them to block Democrats from passing their bills when the left has the majority. However, Trump has warned that if Republicans don’t do it now, Democrats will eliminate the filibuster when they get control, and then there will be no stopping them.
Trump had first posted a lengthy statement on Friday, saying it was time for the Republicans to play their “Trump card” and go for the “nuclear option” by getting rid of the filibuster.
Trump explained that if Democrats get back into power, they are going to do it anyway, and noted that the only thing stopping them the last time was former Sens. Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema. Trump also warned that when Democrats abolish the filibuster, they are going to pack the Supreme Court and give statehood to Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.
On Saturday, Trump doubled down, in another effort to convince Republicans to terminate the filibuster. He wrote:
Remember, Republicans, regardless of the Schumer Shutdown, the Democrats will terminate the Filibuster the first chance they get. They will Pack the Supreme Court, pick up two States, and add at least 8 Electoral Votes. Their two objectors are gone!!! Don’t be WEAK AND STUPID. FIGHT,FIGHT, FIGHT! WIN, WIN, WIN!
We will immediately END the Extortionist Shutdown, get ALL of our agenda passed, and make life so good for Americans that these DERANGED DEMOCRAT politicians will never again have the chance to DESTROY AMERICA!
Republicans, you will rue the day that you didn’t TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER!!! BE TOUGH, BE SMART, AND WIN!!! This is much bigger than the Shutdown, this is the survival of our Country!
Sunday, the president appeared to be losing patience, as he blasted out a new message in all-caps and pinned it to the top of his Truth Social page:
TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, NOT JUST FOR THE SHUTDOWN, BUT FOR EVERYTHING ELSE. WE WILL GET ALL OF OUR COMMON SENSE POLICIES APPROVED (VOTER ID, ANYONE?) AND MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
REMEMBER, THE DEMOCRATS WILL DO IT IMMEDIATELY, AS SOON AS THEY GET THE CHANCE. OUR DOING IT WILL NOT GIVE THEM THE CHANCE. REPUBLICANS, BE TOUGH AND SMART! THE DEMS ARE CRAZED LUNATICS, THEY WILL NOT OPEN UP OUR COUNTRY NO MATTER HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IRREPARABLY HARMED!
