Trump breaks his silence over ‘witch hunt’ against former Brazilian president Bolsonaro

President Donald Trump spoke out in support of his friend and former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro in a Truth Social post Monday morning.

Bolsonaro, a conservative, served as president of Brazil from Jan. 2019 to Jan. 2023. He is going through an experience very similar to what Trump endured after his first term in office. Bolsanaro lost his re-election campaign to far-left socialist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonario was then accused of multiple crimes, including attempting a coup. He was even accused of plotting to assassinate da Silva. His passport has been revoked, and he is not allowed to leave the country.

The former Brazilian president is now going through a trial before Brazil’s Supreme Court, along with 7 other people, including former military officers, on allegations that they plotted a coup to prevent da Silva from taking office in January 2023.

In his Truth Social post, Trump wrote:

Brazil is doing a terrible thing on their treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro. I have watched, as has the World, as they have done nothing but come after him, day after day, night after night, month after month, year after year! He is not guilty of anything, except having fought for THE PEOPLE.

I have gotten to know Jair Bolsonaro, and he was a strong Leader, who truly loved his Country — Also, a very tough negotiator on TRADE. His Election was very close and now, he is leading in the Polls.

This is nothing more, or less, than an attack on a Political Opponent — Something I know much about! It happened to me, times 10, and now our Country is the “HOTTEST” in the World! The Great People of Brazil will not stand for what they are doing to their former President.

I’ll be watching the WITCH HUNT of Jair Bolsonaro, his family, and thousands of his supporters, very closely. The only Trial that should be happening is a Trial by the Voters of Brazil — It’s called an Election. LEAVE BOLSONARO ALONE!

Bolsonaro’s son, Brazilian Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, is in the United States and announced in March that he will seek asylum in the U.S., as it’s not safe for him to return to Brazil.

Responding to President Trump’s message about his father, the young Bolsonaro wrote on Monday, “🇺🇸🇧🇷 Many people have been calling me, but we cannot provide more details about this. What I can say is that this will not be the only news coming from the USA in the near future. I take this opportunity to thank everyone who is committed to this battle. Support @realDonaldTrump’s post on Truth Social and other networks. Strengthen your prayers 🙏.”

Eduardo Bolsonaro posted a video over the weekend, in a tribute to the July 4th holiday.
