In a Truth Social post this week, President Trump announced that he has appointed a new Director for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
The position does not require Senate confirmation. The Bureau of Prisons has 121 facilities across the United States, with 155,000 prisoners, and a staff of around 36,000.
The Biden administration had appointed Colette Peters, former director of the Oregon Department of Corrections, for the role in 2022, but her sometimes turbulent reign ended the day President Trump was inaugurated back into office.
William Lothrop has been serving as acting director for the past two months. Now President Trump has announced the new director. He wrote:
I am pleased to announce that William “Billy” Marshall III, of the Great State of West Virginia, a State I love and won SIX times, as the next Director of the Bureau of Prisons.
Billy has a distinguished Law Enforcement career, rising from the ranks of the West Virginia State Police to serving as the current Commissioner of the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Billy is a Strong Advocate for LAW AND ORDER. He understands the struggles of our prisons better than anyone, and will help fix our broken Criminal Justice System. Congratulations Billy, you will inspire us all!
According to a Forbes report, Marshall served 25 years with the West Virginia State Police before retiring in 2017. He was appointed then then-WV Gov. Jim Justice in 2017 to serve as the Criminal Investigation Director for the former West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, now Department of Homeland Security. In January 2023, Justice appointed him to serve as the commissioner of West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation
