The relationship between billionaire Elon Musk and the Trump White House could now be listed under the category: “It’s complicated.”
Musk, who headed up the the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) until the end of May, just joined President Trump in the Oval Office for a very friendly press conference last week, but the gloves have since come off.
Musk is now doubling down in his opposition to Trump’s budget legislation, called The Big Beautiful Bill, which is currently be considered by the U.S. Senate, noting that it will increase the debt limit.
Politico suggested in a report on Tuesday that the budget bill will also have a negative impact on Tesla:
The legislation terminates multiple tax credits that Tesla — as one of the largest electric vehicle manufacturers in America — currently qualifies for: a $7,500 federal tax credit for new EVs, the $4,000 credit for used EVs, and a $1,000 credit for Level 2 charger installation. The bill would also impose a $250 yearly federal registration fee for EV owners only.
If the bill is passed as currently written, Tesla’s $11.4 billion in regulatory credits would expire at the end of 2025.Those credits contributed to Tesla’s profitability in the first quarter this year.
Musk has been blasting out warnings on X all week, and says America is headed straight for “debt slavery” if the overspending doesn’t stop. He is now calling for people to call their senators and “KILL THE BILL.”
In the wee hours of the morning on Wednesday, he sounded the alarm, writing, “Interest payments already consume 25% of all government revenue. If the massive deficit spending continues, there will only be money for interest payments and nothing else! No social security, no medical, no defense … nothing.”

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) is one of those joining Musk in raising the red flags.
“The accrued interest on the national debt now exceeds $1 trillion a year—more than we spend on national defense. And yet Congress continues to add to the debt at an astounding rate of $2 trillion per year—with our national debt growing faster than our economy. Unless we turn this around quickly, our debt and deficit will increasingly threaten our ability to fund the basic operations of government,” Lee warned.
“This is debt slavery for the American people,” Musk wrote in response.

“A new spending bill should be drafted that doesn’t massively grow the deficit and increase the debt ceiling by 5 TRILLION DOLLARS,” Musk suggested.

Wednesday afternoon, Musk took the gloves off completely. “Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL,” he urged.

“This spending bill contains the largest increase in the debt ceiling in US history! It is the Debt Slavery Bill,” Musk warned in another post, responding to a comment by Sen. Rand Paul.

House Speaker Mike Johnson tried to smooth over the escalating division during a press briefing Wednesday.
“Elon and I left on a great note . And then yesterday, 24 hours later, he does a 180 and he comes out and opposes the bill, and it surprised me, frankly,” he said, adding that he believes Elon is “way off” on his assessment of the bill.
Musk responded to the video, writing, “No one who actually reads the bill should be able to stomach it.”
