Tributes are pouring in for Ella Cook, a young girl from Mountain Brook, Alabama, who was killed in the weekend shooting at Brown University, including a message from Vice President JD Vance, as her death was announced during a Sunday sermon at Birmingham’s Cathedral Church of the Advent.

“This beautiful young girl was one of the murdered students at Brown University. It takes special courage to lead an organization of conservatives on a left-wing campus, and I am very sorry our country has lost one of its bright young stars,” said Vice President Vance. “Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord.”

Vance’s remarks came after the College Republicans of America said Cook served as vice president of its Brown University chapter.

“Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” said Martin Bertao, President of the College Republicans of America. “Our prayers are with her family, our Brown CR’s, and the entirety of the campus as they heal from this tragedy.”

Reports say Ella was studying for an upcoming exam with classmates when gunfire broke out in the auditorium-style classroom. The second victim was identified as MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman majoring in biochemistry and neuroscience who was helping a friend study when he was shot. Nine others were injured in the Saturday afternoon attack.

Senator Katie Britt released a statement honoring the Alabama native on Monday, saying, “There are no words that can ease the pain that Ella’s family and friends are enduring right now.”
