Elon Musk has urged California to pass SB 1047, a controversial bill that would regulate artificial intelligence (AI) by holding tech companies and developers accountable for safety testing and implementing safeguards against cyberattacks.
Musk, who owns the social media platform X, acknowledged that supporting the bill was difficult but emphasized his long-standing advocacy for AI regulation, similar to other potentially risky technologies.
The bill mandates that developers spending over $100 million on AI models must implement safety measures and provide protocols for shutting down the AI if necessary. It also includes provisions for whistleblower protections and civil actions against developers if AI causes significant harm.
SB 1047 is one of many AI-related bills introduced in California as concerns about AI-driven misinformation grow ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
This is a tough call and will make some people upset, but, all things considered, I think California should probably pass the SB 1047 AI safety bill.

Honestly I haven’t studied SB 1047 hard enough — I don’t think it saves the world by itself, so the main impact is political consequences on which I’m not expert. But given how it selectively hits big AI companies like yours, this looks to me like an act of integrity by you. 🫡
