TIME TO CELEBRATE: Younger British generations embracing this American tradition

FROM FOX NEWS:Thanksgiving isn’t just an American thing anymore: it’s becoming a British obsession.

Younger people in Britain are driving the trend. According to Mintel research, 42% of Gen Z and millennials in the U.K. have attended a Thanksgiving meal, and 16% say they plan to host or attend one for the first time this November. Over half believe American-style holidays like Thanksgiving and Halloween are becoming “bigger fixtures” on the British calendar.

That appetite for Thanksgiving fits into a larger shift in how Britons approach food. Innova Market Insights calls it the “Local Goes Global” trend: a surge in curiosity about international flavors. The firm’s latest U.K. food-market data show products inspired by American cuisine are up 8% across the region, as consumers look for bold, recognizable tastes that still feel a little exotic.

“U.K. interest in Thanksgiving reflects a growing appetite for American food,” Trish Caddy, associate director of food service research at Mintel, told The Guardian.

“It’s less cultural adoption, more culinary celebration. This taps into a wider experience-driven eating trend where people seek themed menus, social connection and limited-edition offerings.”

The “culinary celebration” is landing on British tables. Pipers Farm, a Devon-based online farm shop selling sustainably sourced meat, reported a whopping 38% increase in turkey and Thanksgiving-related sales in the two weeks leading up to the holiday last year. They expect this to be another record-breaking year, so the farm has added more sides and turkey sizes to their menu.

Waitrose, a supermarket chain in the UK, told the Guardian that it estimates one in six Britons celebrate Thanksgiving, and that number is on the rise.

Another reason for the shift toward the holiday is social media-inspired FOMO (fear of missing out). Users see Americans gearing up for the festivities, sharing recipes, and posting pics of the celebration — and they want to join the fun.

Other households have joined in because they have welcomed an American to the family or they have visited America during the holiday and fell in love with it.

Whatever the reason, Thanksgiving is making a lot of hungry Brits happy across the pond.

What is on a Britsgiving table? That depends on the cook, but turkey and all the sides—cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, stuffing, and mashed potatoes—are mentioned in the Guardian article. Ocado, an online grocery service, launched a dedicated “American shop” last year, and it’s bestsellers at Thanksgiving are Libby’s Pumpkin Puree, Keebler Pie Crust, and Borden Egg Nog.
