On Thursday morning, the Republican-led Senate voted to pass a package of spending cuts after a 13-hour series of votes on amendments. It heads to the House for approval.
NBC NEWS reports: “The rescissions package cancels previously approved funding totaling $9 billion for foreign aid and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds NPR and PBS. Republicans passed it through a rarely used process to evade the 60-vote threshold and modify a bipartisan spending deal on party lines.
“Senate Democrats unanimously voted to reject the package.”
The 51-48 vote saw two Republicans, Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), joining Democrats in opposition to it.
The measure returns to the House for another vote before Trump can sign it into law.
Senators amended the House-passed measure last month to remove $400 million in cuts to PEPFAR, the foreign aid program combating HIV/AIDS.
“The bill must be signed into law by midnight Friday for the proposed cuts to stand,” NBC noted.
