FLASHBACK: Nearly one year ago – on January 10, 2025 – the New York Times posted an article titled, “Biden Raises Bounty for Nicolás Maduro to $25 Million.” The article begins:
The Biden administration said on Friday that it was offering $25 million for information leading to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, the president of Venezuela, after he assumed a third term in office despite evidence suggesting that he lost Venezuela’s recent election.
The announcement was a retaliatory measure by Washington, which does not recognize Mr. Maduro as the rightful president of Venezuela. Mr. Maduro has presented no evidence that he won a July election, while his opponent Edmundo González has presented thousands of publicly available vote tallies that he says indicate he easily won the most votes.
The United States has said that Mr. González is the president-elect of Venezuela and has urged Mr. Maduro to step aside.
The Biden administration also announced that it was extending protections for roughly 600,000 Venezuelan migrants living in the United States with temporary protected status. The measure allows those who apply to stay for an extra 18 months.
DMLNEWSAPP OPINION: The Biden administration didn’t really have any intention on arresting Nicolas Maduro – they just used that as an excuse to extend deportation protections for 600,000 Venezuelans living in the United States.
FAST-FORWARD TO TODAY: The Trump administration has arrested Maduro, and now Democrats are howling in protest.
Democrats call for Trump impeachment after Venezuela military operation
From Fox News: Democrats’ anger over President Donald Trump’s weekend operation in Venezuela is now turning into demands for his impeachment by some members of the party’s leftmost flank.
Several progressives have now called for proceedings against Trump after the administration carried out strikes in Caracas and captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
“Many Americans woke up to a sick sense of déjà vu. Under the guise of liberty, an administration of warmongers has lied to justify an invasion and is dragging us into an illegal, endless war so they can extract resources and expand their wealth,” Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., a member of the House’s “Squad,” posted on X over the weekend.
“We must pass Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s War Powers Resolution that asserts Congress’ authorities, and Trump must be impeached.”

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) raged, “President Trump’s unauthorized military action in Venezuela is unconstitutional, dangerous, and an impeachable abuse of power. Congress alone has the authority to declare war and Trump is once again ignoring the law to serve his own interests.”
“”I urge my Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives to finally join Democrats in reasserting congressional authority by holding this president accountable for this gross violation of the Constitution,” he added in a statement.

Rep. April McClain Delaney (D-MD) wrote, “Let’s be clear, invading and running another country without a congressional declaration of war is an impeachable offense. Whether it makes sense to pursue impeachment as the best strategy to end this lawlessness is a tactical judgment that our Caucus needs to seriously deliberate.”
