News details and video footage is surfacing on the deadly Christmas Day plane crash over Kazakhstan, including chilling video from inside the the plane during the final moments of the flight.

From the Wall Street Journal: At least 38 people were killed when a passenger jet headed for Russia crashed in Kazakhstan in an incident that Ukraine officials and aviation experts said was likely caused by Russian antiaircraft fire.

The Azerbaijan Airlines plane was flying from Baku in Azerbaijan to Grozny in Russia and diverted course over an area where Moscow’s air defenses have battled Ukrainian drones in recent weeks. The flight—carrying 62 passengers and five crew members—crashed near Aktau in western Kazakhstan after turning around and flying east over the Caspian Sea. As many as 29 passengers survived.

Citing assessments of footage of the crash, the damage to the aircraft, and recent military activity, aviation-security firm, Osprey Flight Solutions, said in an alert to airlines that the flight “was likely shot down by a Russian military air-defense system.”

At first, Azerbaijan Airlines said the Embraer 190 passenger jet may have hit a flock of birds, and the airline’s president said that he was told the plane had been diverted due to poor weather conditions. Now it appears that neither birds nor weather was to blame for the crash… but the Russian military.

Video taken from someone on the ground shows the plane flying erratically as it appeared to be searching for a place to land. When the plane finally came down, trying to land on a flat area, it broke apart, with the front of the plane erupting in a huge ball of fire.

Both pilots were reportedly killed in the crash. Those who did survive appear to have all been seated in the back half of the plane.

A chilling video is now going viral which one passenger toward the back of the plane took during the last moments of the flight. The man reportedly sent the video to his wife before the crash. Footage from inside after the crash has been added to this video, as survivors were trying to get out.

The man who filmed the chilling video is one of those who survived.  He shows additional footage from the scene once he got out of the plane.

Below is another video taken from inside the plane ahead of the crash:

Damage to the outside of the plane has authorities believing it was hit by shrapnel.

Some passengers have already managed to give short testimonies and comment on what happened. Thus, Zaur Mamedov, one of the survivors of the plane crash, says:

“For the third time, something exploded. There was an explosion – I wouldn’t say that it was inside the plane. Where I was sitting, the lining next to me flew off.”

He added that he reached for his life jacket, and there was a hole in it:

“I took the jacket, and I look: there was a hole in the jacket – a piece of shrapnel had pierced it. After this explosion, right between my legs – somewhere there – this piece of shrapnel flew in and hit me. It pierced the jacket right through.”
