SYMBOLIC MOVE: Another country plans to recognize a Palestinian state, Trump fires back

From NBC News: Canada plans to recognize a Palestinian state in September, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday, the latest in a series of symbolic announcements that are part of a broader global shift against Israel’s policies in Gaza.

Carney convened a Cabinet meeting to discuss the situation in the battered Palestinian territory. He said it came after he discussed the crisis with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer who announced a similar move on Tuesday.

Leaders are under mounting pressure over the issue as scenes of hunger in Gaza have horrified so many across the world.

“The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable,” Carney said

“Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025.”

Carney laid down conditions, saying the Palestinian Authority MST “hold general elections in 2026 in which Hamas can play no part, and to demilitarize the Palestinian state.”

NBC notes that “an election in the wrecked strip is not likely anytime soon.”

US President Donald J. Trump responded to the news with a post on Truth Social.

“Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh’ Canada!!!” he wrote.

Trump followed up with a Truth about Hamas.

“The fastest way to end the Humanitarian Crises in Gaza is for Hamas to SURRENDER AND RELEASE THE HOSTAGES!!!”

MORE CONTEXT

From NY Post: Trump’s remark came as his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, was slated to touch down in Israel in a bid to salvage the cease-fire talks — as starvation continues to grip the Palestinian enclave.

The cease-fire talks between the Jewish state and terror group ended in a deadlock last week after both sides pointed the finger at each other over the delays in bringing an end to the fighting.

Israel on Wednesday had fired back a response to Hamas’ latest amendments to a US proposal that would see a 60-day truce and the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, a source told Reuters.

Israeli officials have in recent days suggested that Israel annex parts of Gaza if the stalemate continues.
