Proverbs 17:28

Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent,
and discerning if they hold their tongues.

[New International Version]

This verse addresses the silence and self-restraint of unspoken speech.

It suggests that even a fool can appear wise by staying quiet, as speaking carelessly often reveals ignorance. The importance of thoughtfulness must be imbued, because discretion in words can create an impression of discernment and intelligence.

Individuals must listen and think before speaking if their speech is to match their actions. Sometimes, wisdom is achieved through revelation and honor. And sometimes, silence prevents misunderstandings and preserves dignity.
