Former MLB player Kevin Youkilis criticized Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) for her response to a recent attack on Jewish protesters in Boulder, Colorado.
Ocasio-Cortez had expressed horror at the incident and condemned rising antisemitism, stating, “My heart is with the victims and our Jewish communities across the country.”
The attack involved Mohamed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian national, who allegedly firebombed a group of Israeli protesters in Colorado using a homemade flamethrower and Molotov cocktails. The victims, aged 52 to 88, were hospitalized for their injuries. Soliman faces federal hate crime charges and 16 counts of attempted first-degree murder, potentially resulting in a 624-year prison sentence. The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are investigating the case, officially labeling it a terrorist act.
Youkilis, who is Jewish, dismissed her statement as insufficient, accusing her of failing to take concrete action against growing antisemitic activity, particularly in New York City. Youkilis called on Ocasio-Cortez to confront radical groups in New York City that have been calling for intifadas, arguing that true leadership requires addressing such issues directly rather than merely issuing statements after violent incidents. He urged her to take a more proactive stance against antisemitic rhetoric and actions within her own constituency.
“Jews are targeted with violence and it’s the same virtue signal post time and time again,” he wrote on X in response. “What have you done to confront those calling for intifadas in NYC? Until you create a plan of action, your repeated virtue signaling after the violence occurs holds no weight.”

This incident has sparked a broader conversation about the responsibilities of public figures in addressing and combating antisemitism. Critics argue that statements of solidarity are not enough and that concrete actions are necessary to protect Jewish communities and prevent further attacks.
When asked what he wanted the Democrat lawmaker to do, Youkilis answered, “Confront the radical mobs chanting for intifadas in NYC. That would be brave leadership, but we know politicians, on both sides of the aisle, shy away in fear of losing votes and power.”
