On January 21, just one day after his inauguration, President Donald Trump welcomed billionaire Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, to the White House.
Altman, along with fellow billionaires Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and Soft Bank CEO Masayoshi Son, had appeared with President Trump at a press briefing at the White House to announce the $500 billion AI infrastructure investment called Project Stargate, described as a private investment in the United States.
Altman, a longtime Democrat donor, had previously been a staunch Trump critic – even going so far as to praise billionaire Reid Hoffman (who funded E. Jean Carroll’s lawsuit against Trump) for helping to prevent Trump from being re-elected in 2020.
However, in December Altman appeared to make a turn-around, and donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund. He came to the White House the day after Trump’s inauguration and made his big announcement about the massive AI infrastructure project, Stargate, prompting Elon Musk to issue a warning that he wasn’t everything he seemed.
Now, Altman appears to have flipped back the other direction – and is reportedly hosting a fundraiser for a Democrat Senator who has repeatedly tried to thwart Trump’s agenda.
Breitbart writes: Sam Altman, the CEO of ChatGPT developer OpenAI, is among the list of people set to host a fundraiser for Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), who has voted against most of President Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees.
Other people who will join Altman in hosting a lunch fundraiser for Warner on March 20 include, Chris Lehane, a Democrat political consultant, according to an invitation to the fundraiser viewed by Breitbart News. In August 2024, the New York Times reported that OpenAI had picked Lehane to serve as the vice president of global policy.
In addition to voting against most of Trump’s cabinet picks, Warner, who serves as the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, was one of the factors behind the slow-walking of now-Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s confirmation.
Altman serving as one of the hosts of the fundraiser comes after he and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, and Oracle Board Chair and CTO Larry Ellison joined Trump at the White House in January to announce that the men were joining together to create a company named, “Stargate.”
The Washington Examiner noted that Warner is up for reelection in 2026, and outgoing Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, a Republican, is being urged to run against Warner to help secure the Republican majority in the Senate.
One Trump associated described Altman hosting the fundraiser for the Democrat senator as a “stab in the back,” and added, “Say one thing to his face and another behind his back, no one likes that.”
Elon Musk had sounded the alarm when Altman went to the White House after Trump’s inauguration, saying he didn’t have the money to stand behind the project he had announced. Musk has repeatedly dubbed him, “Scam Altman.”
Altman’s social media account is literally filled with anti-Trump posts.
In October 2016, Altman wrote in a Twitter post, “Back to work tomorrow on a new project to stop Trump.”
In March 2017, at the beginning of Trump’s first term in office, Altman wrote, “I think Trump is terrible and few things would make me happier than him not being president.”
In March 2022, Altman wrote, “I still don’t think most Democrats realize how ugly the 2022 elections may be, or how possible it is that Trump could win in 2024.”
Appearing to address criticism of his previous anti-Trump positions, Altman wrote on January 22, after his White House visit, “Watching @potus more carefully recently has really changed my perspective on him (i wish i had done more of my own thinking and definitely fell in the npc trap). I’m not going to agree with him on everything, but I think he will be incredible for the country in many ways!”
But now, Altman is hosting a fundraiser to support an anti-Trump Democrat senator.
