A letter was sent to President-elect Donald Trump on January 2, drawing attention to money funneled to the Taliban terror group by the Biden administration.
The letter to Trump, sent by Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) reveals that he sponsored a bill to stop the money flow in 2023, and the bill passed unanimously in the House. However, then-majority leader Chuck Schumer refused to bring it to a vote in the Senate.
The letter reads:
“I write to express my strong concerns with foreign aid being funneled to the Taliban, and my desire to work with your administration to stop tax dollars from going to terrorists.
“During the 118th Congress, it was brought to my attention the U.S. State Department, under the Biden administration, was funneling money to the Taliban. In fact, when I questioned Secretary Antony Blinken about this, he admitted that the non-governmental organizations paid nearly $10 million of foreign aid to the Taliban in taxes.
“The larger issue, which Secretary Blinken failed to acknowledge, is the shipments of cash payments in United States dollars to Afghanistan’s central bank. These cash shipments are auctioned off and after that, they are nearly impossible to track. This is how the Taliban is being funded and plans to fund terrorism around the world.
“In 2023, I introduced a bill requiring the State Department to discourage foreign countries from providing financial or material support to the Taliban, and to report on direct-cash assistance programs and Taliban influence over Afghanistan’s Central Bank. My bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously. Unfortunately, then-Majority Leader Chuck Schumer refused to bring the bill to a vote in the Senate. I plan to reintroduce this legislation in the 119th Congress and would gladly welcome your support.
“The United States of America should not fund its enemies abroad. I implore you to take action to put an end to wasteful foreign aid spending and to support efforts in Congress to put Americans first. I look forward to working with you during your second term as President.”

“Are we really sending US taxpayer money to the Taliban?” Elon Musk asked when the letter was posted to social media on Monday.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) replied, “Yep, believe it or not, the U.S. doesn’t even classify the Taliban as a terrorist organization.
“We introduced H.R. 9163 last Congress, with support from
@RepTimBurchett. Our bill bans federal agencies from recognizing Taliban sovereignty or spending a single taxpayer dollar to support them. The Taliban is a terrorist organization, and it’s time we start treating them like one.”
