Independent journalist Leeroy Johnson, better known on X as “Viral News NYC,” is one of the best news sources if anyone wants to know what’s REALLY happening on the streets of New York City.
Over the last several years, Johnson has reported extensively about the escalating crime on the streets due to the influx of illegal alien gang members that have descended on New York.
Over the weekend, Johnson announced that a mob of males dressed all in black have been zipping around the city on scooters and robbing U.S. Postal Service mail drop boxes, and they’re getting away with it.
At 3:00 am. on Saturday, he wrote in a post on X, “A scooter mailbox robbery crew has struck again in Midtown Manhattan. Police are in pursuit of the suspects—described as Black males dressed in all black—spotted near the scene moments after the crime. The chase is unfolding right now.”

Johnson caught the thugs in action, and posted a video minutes later. He wrote: “Earlier in the night, NYPD in Midtown called a Level 1 mobilization to stop these scooter crews. But they slipped away and continued their crime spree. Exclusive footage shows them ripping through NYC streets — starting in Midtown and hitting multiple USPS mailboxes all the way down to the West Village. They rode on sidewalks, dodged pedestrians, and used devices to fish mail out of the boxes. Victims now face stolen checks, IDs, and bank fraud. Crews like this are terrorizing the city — and getting away.”
The video shows a man standing in front of a U.S. mail dropbox and using some sort of device to fish multiple pieces of mail from the box.
Sunday evening, Johnson added in another post on X: “So imagine this. This crew hit multiple targets from uptown Manhattan all the way to the west Village and then made their way back to uptown Manhattan, ripping through sidewalks robbing people’s phones hitting I want to say at least 20 different mailboxes and not one peep about it in the news. From what I’m getting, this is a weekly occurrence throughout these areas with the same crew. Why do you think that is?”

“Fyi those are not black males. I believe those are Hispanic males,” he added.

“I tracked this crew from Midtown all the way to the West Village,” he wrote in another post. “I got them hitting 3 different mailboxes. It’s hard enough filming them hit 1 box. I should play the lottery.”

In another post on X, Johnson wrote:
I keep forgetting this is a federal crime since it has to do with mail. I can tell you this much. I’ve been keeping my eyes on these Mailbox crews for a while. They are extremely organized and normally have chat groups they plan out of.
The boss of the chat groups would give orders to these crews, and they would go out and rob mail. Later on, they would bring the stolen mail ( checks / cards ), and the bosses would cash them or run someone’s credit card to the ground.
This is a mixed operation. They use both migrant gang members and local gang members. I believe there are multiple different organizations that are sending out troops to Rob mail.

“Maybe someone from the @USPS should tell people to stop dropping their mail into public mailboxes and have people bring their mail directly into the post office. Just a thought 🙃😅,” Johnson warned, adding, “At least until you guys figure out a way to prevent these crews from stealing mail…”

Sharing two additional videos in the middle late Saturday night, Johnson explained, “After tracking the scooter robbery crews from Midtown to the West Village, i was able to get ahead of them and get to their next target before them. I just out my car and am waiting for a bit, and like magic, they showed up to the location I thought they would hit and I was correct!”
Asking for help from the public, Johnson wrote, “I need a favor from New Yorkers in the Midtown and West Village area. If you spot the scooter crews hitting mailboxes, please notify me ASAP. Since the police scanners [wrnt] encrypted in certain areas its becoming extremely hard for me to track them. So it’s up to you guys.”
