Sources report that President-elect Donald Trump has chosen South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security.
Her appointment, alongside immigration hardliners Stephen Miller and Tom Homan in senior roles, underscores Trump’s commitment to strict immigration policies. A loyal Trump supporter, Noem will lead an agency central to his domestic agenda.
During Trump’s previous term, DHS faced considerable upheaval, with five different leaders and only two Senate-confirmed. DHS has a $60 billion budget and oversees hundreds of thousands of employees.
Noem, a former South Dakota representative, will now oversee the vast Department of Homeland Security, which includes US Customs and Border Protection, ICE, FEMA, and the Secret Service. She was once a vice presidential contender for Trump, though her potential shorted out after controversy around her book No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward.
In her book, Noem shared that she once euthanized her 14-month-old dog, Cricket, for not being a suitable hunting dog, describing the animal as “untrainable.” She later explained these anecdotes were intended to demonstrate her ability to handle challenging, unpleasant tasks when needed.
