House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) invited President Trump to deliver the State of the Union on Feb. 24, marking Trump’s first such address of his second term.
Trump last spoke to a joint session of Congress in March 2024, though that appearance was not a formal State of the Union.
Johnson wrote in his letter:
“As our nation marks the Semiquincentennial Anniversary of American Independence, the United States stands stronger, freer, and more prosperous under your leadership and bold action. Together in 2025, your administration and the 119th Congress delivered one of the most consequential agendas in history, and Americans across this great country will experience the tangible results of commonsense governance. We look forward to advancing the important work ahead of us in 2026, serving the American people, defending liberty, and preserving this grand experiment in self-governance. To that end, it is my distinct honor and great privilege to invite you to address a Joint Session of Congress on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in the Chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives.”
During President Trump’s March address to Congress, several Democrats walked out midway through his speech, while Rep. Al Green (D-TX) heckled the president and was removed by the sergeant-at-arms. At Trump’s 2020 State of the Union, then–Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) famously tore up her copy of his speech. It remains unclear how Democrats will respond this time.
Trump’s upcoming address is expected to highlight the capture of Nicolás Maduro, his immigration crackdown, the reconciliation megabill passed last year, and the 2026 midterm elections.
