From Axios: Democratic lawmakers are discussing a litany of options to protest at President Trump’s speech to Congress on Tuesday, including through outright disruption, a half dozen House Democrats told Axios.
Why it matters: Some of these tactics go beyond their leaders’ recommendation that members bring guests hurt by Trump and DOGE. This sets up a potential clash between party traditionalists and its more combative anti-Trump wing.
“The part that we all agree on is that this is not business as usual and we would like to find a way — productively — to express our outrage,” one House Democrat told Axios.
There is widespread disagreement among Democrats, both inside and outside of Congress, over what would be the most appropriate and effective form of demonstration.
Some Democrats have reportedly declared they will storm out of the chamber when President Trump says something they disagree with, including if he makes comments against transgender children – which he will.
Others intend to just sit stone-faced the entire time, and never applaud for anything.
Although Democrat leadership has reportedly discouraged bringing props, some radical Democrats have discussed bringing the following with them into the chamber during the President’s speech:
- Signs with anti-Trump and anti-Doge messages
- Hand clappers
- Pocket constitutions
- Eggs or empty egg cartons
Some Democrat groups are planning to wear matching clothes
- Pink: The Democratic Women’s Caucus
- Black: Female members of the Congressional Black Caucus
- Blue and yellow: Ukraine Caucus co-chair Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) will distribute ties and scarves with the colors of Ukraine’s flag

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a Fox News interview that President Trump is not worried about Democrats’ disruption plans.
“I think, frankly, the Democrats should think about if they should stand up in applause for some of the things President Trump will be talking about. He’s bringing common sense back to this country. Look at Democrats: yesterday, 45 Senate Dems voted against keeping men out of women’s sports. How can you be against that when 80% of the country is for it?” she said.
KAROLINE LEAVITT: “TRUMP IS BRINGING COMMON SENSE BACK.”

Rep. Lance Gooden commented on the Democrats’ disruption plans, writing, “If Democrats act like immature juveniles, they should be escorted out of the House chamber immediately.”
