The Onion won a bankruptcy auction for Alex Jones’ Infowars, backed by Sandy Hook families owed over $1 billion in defamation judgments for Jones’ claims that the 2012 shooting was a hoax. The sale price remains undisclosed.

Robbie Parker, whose daughter Emilie was killed in the 2012 shooting in Connecticut, said the following in a statement provided by his lawyers: “The dissolution of Alex Jones’ assets and the death of Infowars is the justice we have long awaited and fought for.”

Jones confirmed Infowars’ acquisition by The Onion in a social media post and stated he intends to file legal challenges to halt the sale.

“I just got word 15 minutes ago that my lawyers and folks met with the U.S. trustee over our bankruptcy this morning and they said they are shutting us down even without a court order this morning,” Jones said. “The Connecticut democrats with The Onion newspaper bought us.”

Infowars founder Alex Jones appeared visibly distressed during a live broadcast Thursday, placing his head in his hands, per an AP report. The Onion’s plans for the platform, including its website, social media, Austin studio, trademarks, and video archive, remain unclear.
