From Daily MailA small town in Idaho has been rattled by more than 35 earthquakes in just 24 hours.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the swarm near Stanley, a town of fewer than 150 people perched along a fault line capable of producing major quakes.

The latest tremor, a 3.5 magnitude, hit at 9:48am PT (12:48pm ET) on Wednesday.

Stanley is situated near the Sawtooth Fault, a massive fault line that stretches for 40 miles across central Idaho. The fault runs along the east side of the Sawtooth Mountain range. Although it is the biggest and most famous fault in the area, scientists don’t fully understand it yet. They only have a rough idea of how much the fault moves over time and when past earthquakes happened.

Scientists have affectionately dubbed the Sawtooth Fault a ‘sleeping giant.’ It’s dormant for extended periods, but when it finally wakes up, it can unleash a catastrophic earthquake.

USGS State Geologist Claudio Berti says over 100 seismic events have been recorded in the last 48 hours in the area. He said a similar “swarm” of seismic activity was noted about a week ago in the same area.

“It is impossible to know if a bigger one is coming,” said Berti. “After a 4.0 there is a small possibility that one of 5.0 will follow, but it’s not impossible.”

Stanley Mayor Steve Botti said on Tuesday that he and Berti will work to find locations for USGS seismological equipment to learn more about the earthquake activity there.

“The more information they can get, the better it will be for them and for us,” Botti said.
