President-elect Donald Trump is quickly appointing key White House and Cabinet officials as he prepares for his second term in January.

One crucial position yet to be filled is the head of the Justice Department. Leading contenders include U.S. senators, former DOJ officials, and a former top White House adviser from Trump’s first term, all known for their loyalty to him and support of his agenda.

List below:

  • Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah: Lee is viewed as a more conventional choice for attorney general, likely to have a smoother Senate confirmation process than other potential candidates. However, he may not be pursuing the role. Last week, the Utah Republican indicated he’s focused on building support for Trump’s Cabinet nominees and helping select the Senate majority leader, a process where he will play a key role as chair of the Senate Steering Committee.
  • John Ratcliffe: The former Director of National Intelligence gained prominence in Trump’s first term for his sharp criticism of the FBI and Mueller’s investigation. A former federal prosecutor and Texas congressman, Ratcliffe was appointed by Trump in 2019 as DNI and later joined Trump’s impeachment defense team.
  • Mark Paoletta: The former White House attorney served as counsel to Mike Pence and the Office of Management and Budget during Trump’s first term, and is helping guide DOJ policy for Trump’s transition team, making him a strong candidate for attorney general. Paoletta stated he would enforce strict adherence to Trump’s agenda within the DOJ, asserting on social media that career employees are obligated to implement the President’s policies, regardless of personal views.
  • Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey: Appointed in 2022, Bailey has filed numerous lawsuits against the Biden administration and defended conservative issues in Missouri. His lower profile might benefit him in a Senate confirmation, with support from Missouri Senators Josh Hawley and Eric Schmitt, both former state attorneys general, who could advocate for him if he’s considered.
