From NBC News: A gunman killed seven people at a British Columbia secondary school Tuesday, while two others were found dead at a residence believed to be connected to the campus shooting, police said.

The attacks were carried out Tuesday afternoon in Tumbler Ridge, a small city in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement.

The shooter was also found dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the agency said.

“We believe we’ve been able to identify the shooter,” RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd said at an evening news conference. The release of the shooter’s name, however, would have to wait amid an ongoing investigation, he said.

Any possible connection between the shooter and the school or the residence where additional victims were found was still being investigated, Floyd said.

The report explains that police responded to calls about an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School about 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday. Six victims were found dead at the school, and a 7th victim died on the way to the hospital.

The shooter also reportedly died at the school of a self-inflicted gunshot.

Police then went to a home believed to be connected to the attack and found two people dead inside. Unconfirmed reports have stated this was the home of the shooter, whose mother and brother were found dead.

Approximately 25 additional people at the school suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Two other victims were reportedly airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Tumbler Ridge is a small rural community of about 2,400 people, about 736 miles north of Vancouver.  Tumbler Ridge Secondary School has 175 students enrolled, from grades 7-12, according to the Daily Mail.

Many media outlets are describing the shooter in the horrifying incident as a woman. However, local residents on social media are alleging the shooter is a biological male teen who identified as female. Police have not publicly confirmed the shooter’s identity.

During a press briefing, police oddly described the shooter as the “gun person.”

RCMP official Ken Floyd said, “We’re still trying to determine a lot about the shooter at this stage right now. We believe we’ve been able to identify the shooter, but for privacy reasons and for the conduct of the investigation we’re not releasing that information at this time.”

The shooter had earlier been described as “a woman in a dress with brown hair.” However, there are many unconfirmed social media posts who are sharing statements that contradict the media’s description.

One statement shared on social media states, “…this young man dressed up as a girl killed his mom, kid brother and sister, then decided he was gonna go to the high school and make a scene….”

X user Cole Atkin also commented on the shooting, writing on X, “Tumbler Ridge mass shooting. Suspect has been confirmed to be a transgender teenager. I live 4 doors down the road and was on scene initially and the suspect killed his mother and brother with a shotgun and then killed 7 more at the high school and injured 25 more.”

“It was a transgender teenager. She killed her mom and brother then drove to the school and shot 2 teachers and 3 students. I live down the road and was one of the first on scene,” Atkin added.

In another post, Atkin pointed to a Facebook page belonging to Jennifer Strang, a mother of 5 children in Tumbler Ridge and wrote, “The Facebook is the mom. The victim of the shooting by her trans son. Like I said this isn’t confirmed yet by media but it will be. I know the scoop as I live on the street so just wait for official confirmation.”

In an additional post, Atkin alleged that the shooter was Jesse Strang, who is seen in multiple family photos on Facebook as Jennifer Strang’s eldest son.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney released the following statement:

I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence.

I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens.

Our ability to come together in crisis is the best of our country — our empathy, our unity, and our compassion for each other.

I have connected with Premier Eby to express my condolences, and with the Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, who is coordinating the federal response.

Our officials are in close contact with their counterparts to ensure the community is fully supported as best we can. The Government of Canada stands with all British Columbians as they confront this horrible tragedy.
