Sheriff’s Dept apologizes after being blasted for appalling social media post

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department got themselves in some hot water on Sunday, over a jaw-dropping post on social media that outraged many people.

Many major US cities are on the alert following the U.S. airstrike on Iran, due to Iran’s threats that they will retaliate against America. The U.S. dropped bunker-buster bombs on Iran’s nuclear facilities Saturday night, to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.  The bombs were not dropped on residential areas in Iran.

With that in mind, the LA Sheriff’s Department posted the following shocking statement on social media Sunday evening:

Our hearts go out to the victims and families impacted by the recent bombings in Iran. While this tragic event occurred overseas, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is closely monitoring hte situation alongside our local, state and federal partners.

At the moment, there are no known threats to Los Angeles County. However, out of an abundance of caution, we are increasing patrol checks at places of worship and other sensitive locations throughout the county.

The safety and security of our communities remain our top priority. We will continue to assess and respond to any developments as they arise.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin shared a copy of the now-deleted post and wrote:

The official, verified LA County Sheriff’s Dept posted, then edited, then deleted this eyebrow raising post appearing to express condolences for the “tragic” US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites. Have to imagine someone went rogue here w/ an unapproved post. What a PR disaster.

The LA Sheriff’s Department is getting blasted over the statement.

Eric Daugherty of Florida Voice News wrote, “WTF? The Los Angeles County Sheriff says their “hearts go out” to the people impacted by the U.S. bombings on Iranian nuclear sites, calling the event “tragic.” WHO decided to publish this statement? Is the LA County Sheriff Iran’s newest ally?!”

“Probably the worst way they could have worded this post,” wrote one X user.

“Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office sends condolences to Iran following the US destroying their nuclear plants,” wrote Libs of TikTok.

Geiger Capital wrote, “The Sheriff’s Office of our 2nd largest city is posting thoughts and prayers for Iran’s nuclear facilities…. The largest Iranian population in the US: Los Angeles. Multiculturalism is a threat to America.”

Later the Sheriff’s Department tried to clean it up by posted a much milder statement with no mention of Iran.

Finally, Sunday night, the LA Sheriff’s Department posted the following apology:

We are issuing this statement to formally apologize for an offensive and inappropriate social media post recently posted on our Department social media platforms regarding the ongoing conflict in Iran. This post was unacceptable, made in error, and does not reflect the views of Sheriff Robert G. Luna or the Department. As a law enforcement agency, we do not comment on foreign policy or military matters. Our mission remains solely focused on protecting public safety and serving our diverse communities.

We fully recognize that the words and messages we share carry weight. As law enforcement professionals, we are entrusted with a position of public responsibility, and that trust demands that we communicate accurately. In this instance, we fell short of that expectation, and we are taking quick corrective action. We are committed to learning from this failure and to prevent such incidents from occurring again.

We have updated our social media post and have launched an internal review to determine how it was created and published. Steps are being taken to strengthen our social media oversight protocols and ensure that any future communications align with our Department’s standards of professionalism, respect, and accountability.

We appreciate the continued trust of our community and will work diligently to reaffirm that trust every day.

The apology is not going over any better than the original offensive statement did. Below are just some of the comments pouring in:

Sarah Fields: You’re doing an internal review to determine who published it? Are you trying to tell us that you don’t know who runs your social media? 😂

Rooted.wings: “Absolute freaking joke. You guys are the same idiots raising the sex flag on your pole and posting videos when one of your own was killed in the line of action and you didn’t do anything about it for 48 hours.”

Leftism: “You guys straight up supported terrorists. That’s not something that can be passed as an “offensive post.” The internet is forever.”

Burt Macklin: “How was in made in error? Please elaborate. Did someone slip, fall, and accidentally type that out and hit send on the way down?”

Steve McRae: “You aren’t sorry. You have allowed LA to be taken over by liberals and terrorist sympathizers. You all should be ashamed as your first post is EXACTLY how you all feel, and you just all got called out for it as America is sick of liberal sanctuary city shit.”

By the way, this is the same sheriff who, just earlier this month, declared his department will not be complying with any mass deportation efforts.
