SEND THE CHECKS: GOP senator signals support for Trump’s tariff dividends

Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) stated on Sunday that the Senate should consider legislation offering $2,000 tariff relief checks to Americans, just a week after President Trump endorsed a similar plan.

“I sure hope that we take a look at these types of things and how we can make sure that the American people have more of their hard-earned money back in their pocket,” Britt told host Maria Bartiromo on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Last week, President Trump proposed sending at least $2,000 to most Americans, funded by revenue from his broad tariffs. He also stated that his administration would utilize tariff proceeds to reduce the $38.12 trillion national debt; duties totaled $195 billion in the first three quarters of this year, according to the Treasury’s September report.

The tariffs—defended by the administration before the Supreme Court earlier this month—have led some firms to pass the costs on to their customers. As of Oct. 17, consumers face an average effective tariff rate of 18%, the highest since 1934, according to the Yale Budget Lab.

Britt, however, defended the levies, saying Sunday they are about “leveling the playing field” for American businesses. She also said tariff checks would be well received by Americans.

“President Trump knows that you can put Americans against the world, and if we are on a level playing field, we will always win,” the Alabama Republican added.

Also on Sunday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News that “working families” will receive the rebate checks if Congress passes the proposal and Trump signs it into law. The president and other officials have not specified which income groups would qualify for the dividends.
