President Biden, the man who has labeled former President Donald J. Trump as a “threat to democracy,” briefly wore a “Trump 2024” hat during a visit to a Shanksville, Pa., fire station on the anniversary of 9/11.

According to the White House, it was meant as a gesture of unity, but the moment, caught in a photo and short video, quickly went viral. As a result of the moment, many have begun questioning Biden’s mental sharpness and whether the gesture was a subtle dig at Vice President Kamala Harris, his replacement in the presidential race.

Some reactions have included:

“BREAKING: Kamala did so bad in last night’s debate, Joe Biden just put on a Trump hat,” the Trump campaign’s rapid reaction team posted on X.

“Thanks for the support, Joe!” the campaign added in a separate post.

“What’s Happening?” senior Trump campaign adviser Chris LaCivita posted along with the photo.

White House senior deputy press secretary Andrew Bates claimed that the act was to show unity and wrote the following on social platform X. “At the Shanksville Fire Station, @POTUS spoke about the country’s bipartisan unity after 9/11 and said we needed to get back to that. As a gesture, he gave a hat to a Trump supporter who then said that in the same spirit, POTUS should put on his Trump cap. He briefly wore it.”
