Senate Republicans are scheduled to hold a vote Wednesday on who will be the next Senate Majority Leader, old Twitter posts by two senators running for the spot have just resurfaced.

Three Republicans are running for the leadership role: Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, Sen. John Thune of South Dakota and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas. However, only Scott is viewed as a reliable Trump ally, while Thune and Cornyn, are considered to be “establishment” Republicans, and conservative Republicans are vehemently opposed to either of them being handed the leadership role.

Sen. John Cornyn. Sen. Cornyn was tossing around the idea of running for the GOP Leadership spot way back in February.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, spoke out against that idea, warning on Feb. 29, “It will be difficult for @JohnCornyn to be an effective leader since he is anti-Trump, anti-gun, and will be focused on his highly competitive primary campaign in 2026. Republicans deserve better in their next leader and Texans deserve another conservative Senator.”

At the time, Paxton was fighting off a “securities fraud charge” that was ultimately tossed.

Cornyn turned on the popular Republican attorney general, sneering, “Hard to run from prison, Ken.”

Sen. John Thune. Sunday evening, President-elect Donald Trump’s longtime aide, Dan Scavino, drew attention to an old social media post by Thune.

On October 8, 2016, Thune posted the following statement on Twitter: “Donald Trump should withdraw and Mike Pence should be our nominee effective immediately.”

Thune had made the comment during the same time the liberal media had dropped the bombshell news about the infamous “Access Hollywood” tapes, in which Trump was heard on a hot mic in a salacious conversation with Billy Bush way back in 2005.  Trump had acknowledged his role in what he thought was a private conversation, and said, “I said it, I was wrong and I apologize.”

“I’ve said some foolish things, but there’s a big difference between the words and actions of other people. Bill Clinton has actually abused women and Hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims,” Trump had pointed out.

Republican Sen. John Thune had demanded Trump withdraw and allow Mike Pence to be the nominee to run against Hillary Clinton instead.

Now that Thune’s old tweet has resurfaced, conservatives are blasting him.  Several people are saying it’s time for THUNE to withdraw and allow Scott to be the Senator Majority Leader.
