SEE IT: Democrats having a meltdown over indictment of NY AG Letitia James

Democrats are howling in protest after New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted Thursday for mortgage fraud.

James, 66, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Virginia on two counts: one of bank fraud, and another of making false statements to a financial institution.

The case is centered around a house she purchased in Norfolk, Virginia in 2020. Under the conditions of the loan, James was supposed to occupy and use the home as her secondary residence, which qualified her for a lower interest rate. Instead, she allegedly used it as a rental property.

James ran for office in 2018 on the promise that she would “get Trump,” and filed suit against the Trump Organization in 2022, alleging that Trump was guilty of mortgage fraud, and claimed he misrepresented the value of his property.

Democrats were cheering James on when she went after the Trump Organization, but now that mortgage fraud charges have been brought against her, they are screaming in fury and accusing the Trump administration of “weaponizing” the justice system.

Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) raged, “This is what tyranny looks like. President Trump is using the Justice Department as his personal attack dog, targeting Attorney General Tish James for the ‘crime’ of prosecuting him for fraud—and winning. One U.S. Attorney already refused this case. So, Trump hand-picked an unqualified hack that would go after another political enemy. This isn’t justice. It’s revenge. And it should horrify every American who believes no one is above the law.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) released a lengthy statement and sneered, “The malicious prosecution of Attorney General Tish James is baseless. And the indictment is not worth the paper it is written on.”

In his statement, he claimed the indictment “is part of Donald Trump’s corrupt weaponization of the criminal justice system against anyone who has sought to hold him accountable.”

(In other words, when Trump was indicted, James was only trying to hold him “accountable,” but when she is indicted for the same crime she accused Trump of, it’s not being held “accountable,” it’s “weaponization” of the justice system.)

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) is having a fit as well. Hochul is the very person who held a dramatic press conference with James the day after President Donald Trump’s landslide victory in November. The two voiced their dismay over Trump winning back the White House, and vowed to “fight back” over the next four years.

“New Yorkers know @NewYorkStateAG James for her integrity, her independence, and her relentless fight for justice. What we’re seeing today is nothing less than the weaponization of the Justice Department to punish those who hold the powerful accountable,” Hochul fumed in a post on X Thursday.

Former NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is now running for New York City mayor as an Independent, also condemned the indictment against James.

“In a democracy, the rule of law must be sacred – impartial, objective, and above politics. When the law is weaponized or manipulated to advance political agendas, it erodes public trust and weakens the very foundation of justice. Whether it comes from the right or the left, from prosecutors or politicians, the politicization of law enforcement is dangerous and corrosive,” Cuomo wrote.

“We must restore faith in fairness, facts, and due process – because once justice becomes partisan, everyone loses,” he added.

Front-runner NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, a Democrat socialist Muslim, also howled in protest over James’s indictment. He wrote:

New Yorkers know Attorney General James for who she is: a champion for justice who fights relentlessly for the people. Donald Trump knows her only as an obstacle to his corruption.

No one should be surprised that Donald Trump is employing fascist tactics—prosecuting his opponents, weaponizing the federal government, and attacking the very fabric of our democracy. And Trump should not be surprised when millions of Americans stand up to his authoritarianism and his greed.

If Trump wants to leverage baseless charges to visit political retribution on New York’s Attorney General, he’ll have to go through New Yorkers first. Tish James has had our back, time and again. We have hers.

Mamdani was commenting in response to a video James posted, as she defiantly declared her innocence.

NYC Comptroller Brad Lander (D) sneered, “Keep your corrupt, grubby, abusive hands off @TishJames, Donald Trump. Your cowardice is showing — weak men seek revenge on powerful women who hold them to account. But New Yorkers don’t play. Our Attorney General has been a fierce warrior for our rights, time & again. You better believe we’ll be there for hers.”

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) fumed, “Another dark day for our democracy. Another vindictive prosecution of someone on the president’s enemies list. Another terrible abuse of the Justice Department as an instrument of Trump’s retribution campaign. These actions cannot and will not deter Americans from standing up to this increasingly authoritarian regime.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is also raging mad.

“The President of the United States is openly seeking revenge on his political opponents. First Jim Comey. Now Tish James. Anyone who seeks to hold Donald Trump accountable could be next. Trump is ripping a page right out of the authoritarian handbook,” Warren wrote.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) fumed, “It’s been less than 20 days since Trump ordered AG Bondi to go after three of his political enemies. Now, two have been indicted.⁣ We have a president consumed with going after those who have opposed him and a DOJ bending to his whims.⁣ But I’m not backing down. Neither should you.”

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) also released a statement condemning the indictment against James and claimed the attorneys have found “insufficient evidence” and accused President Trump of weaponizing the federal government to pursue his political enemies.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) raged, “Trump’s march toward authoritarianism continues. If you oppose him politically, he is prepared to charge you with a crime. Too many brave Americans died to defend democracy. Trump cannot be allowed to destroy our Constitution and the rule of law.”

The howls of protest continue….
