SECURED RELEASE: Taliban releases US Citizen from prison

The Taliban freed U.S. citizen Amir Amiri on Sunday following a visit by Washington’s hostage envoy Adam Boehler, the U.S. government said.

Amiri, detained in Afghanistan since December 2024, was released with Qatari mediation and was en route to Doha, an official told Reuters. Boehler’s visit followed President Trump’s warning that the Taliban must return control of Bagram air base to the U.S., or face “bad things” in Afghanistan.

“Throughout Mr. Amiry’s detention, Qatari diplomats remained in close communication with US officials and carried out regular health checks to ensure his wellbeing,” a source familiar with Amiri’s detention told Fox News.

“His release was facilitated by Qatari diplomats in close coordination with the team of the US Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, through Qatar’s role as the United States’ protecting power in Afghanistan,”

Amiri is the fifth U.S. citizen the Taliban has released this year through Qatari mediation, which also secured the September release of a British couple held for eight months. Barbie Reynolds, 76, and her husband Peter Reynolds, 80, arrived in Qatar on Friday after months of negotiations involving Qatar, the Taliban, and Britain. The couple, Afghan citizens who spent 18 years running an education charity in Afghanistan, said they would return if given the chance.

“I want to thank Qatar for helping secure his freedom,” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on X, confirming the release. “POTUS (the president) has made it clear we will not stop until every American unjustly detained abroad is back home.”

Bagram, used by U.S. forces after 9/11, was seized by the Taliban in 2021 following America’s withdrawal and the fall of Kabul’s U.S.-backed government.
