Microsoft CEO Bill Gates warns that if the world avoids major war, another global pandemic is likely within the next 25 years, citing current global unrest as a potential trigger.

His concerns stem from the observed lack of preparedness during the COVID-19 crisis, which spotlighted the scientific community’s anxiety about future health emergencies.

In his 2022 book “How to Prevent the Next Pandemic,” Bill Gates highlighted deficiencies in global health preparedness, advocating for better quarantine methods and vaccine research. He criticized the U.S. for not meeting expectations and leading the international response to pandemics.

UCLA Health noted that the COVID-19 vaccines were developed at unprecedented speed, taking less than a year from pathogen identification to vaccine creation. Treatments, prevention, and natural immunity advancements have also pushed forward.

But experts are now assessing the likelihood of future pandemics. The origins of the coronavirus are still debated, but there’s consensus that pathogens can leap from animals to humans, potentially initiating the formation of new diseases. Mpox and bird flu are currently highlighted threats. In August, the WHO labeled Mpox, which spreads through close contact, as a “public health emergency of international concern.”
