From Fox News: White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called for the firing and investigation of those responsible for a stalled escalator that carried President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump at Tuesday’s United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The escalator malfunction occurred before Trump addressed the General Assembly in New York, and he and the first lady were forced to walk up the stalled machine before making his remarks to other world leaders.
“If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on X in response to a Times of London article published Sunday.
The Times of London article lamented that the Trump administration has slashed U.S. funding to the global organization, as if it must be totally dependent on U.S. funds to operate, and then noted that UN staffers had joked about turning off the escalator. The article reads:
When Trump takes the stage on Tuesday — State Department officials say to expect a focus on “American values” — few in the audience will be laughing this time around. Since returning to the White House, his administration has quickly gone about trying to curtail the UN’s influence: freezing funding, stopping US engagement with the Human Rights Council, quitting the Unesco cultural agency and curating the list of those attending to deny the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas a visa (the general assembly has since voted 145 to five to allow Abbas to speak in a video address).
To mark Trump’s arrival, UN staff members have joked that they may turn off the escalators and elevators and simply tell him they ran out of money, so he has to walk up the stairs.

Video footage of the suspicious incident is going viral on social media. Strangely enough, the escalator suddenly stopped working the moment the President and First Lady stepped onto the escalator, and the second escalator to the right continued working just fine….

Leavitt said in an interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters Tuesday night that it definitely looks like sabotage. She said in addition to the escalator incident, the teleprompter stopped working when President Trump got up to speak, and then Townhall’s Katie Pavlich noticed that the audio inside the room was much lower for Trump than it had been for the previous speaker.
Leavitt said the U.S. Secret Service is investigating the incident, and added, “If we find that these were U.N. staffers who were purposefully trying to trip up, literally trip up the president and the first lady of the United States, well there better be accountability for those people.”

Adding to the suspicious nature of the incident, former Biden State Department Spokesman Ned Price coyly claimed in an MSNBC appearance, “I imagine one of the reasons that escalator stopped is because his administration has withheld hundreds of millions of dollars in funding.”

During his speech, President Trump said, “I ended seven wars, dealt with the leaders with each and every one of these countries, and I never even received a phone call from the United Nations offering to help…”
“These are the two things I got from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter. Thank you very much,” he joked.

One X user, a U.S. Navy veteran, wrote, “I watched the whole speech that our President gave to the UN today. I watched from the broken escalator to the broken teleprompter to the end. IMO it was one of his best speeches ever. Thankful that we have a President who is finished tiptoing around the useless UN. He called them out forcefully and politely. He courageously told the truth about the state of our world. I would vote for him again in a heartbeat.”
