Masked police officers in Romania conducted new raids early Wednesday at the home of internet influencer Andrew Tate, who is awaiting trial on charges of human trafficking, rape, and forming a criminal gang to exploit women.
Romania’s anti-organized crime agency, DIICOT, searched four properties in Bucharest and Ilfov, investigating human trafficking, trafficking minors, sexual misconduct with a minor, influencing statements, and money laundering. Tate’s spokesperson, Mateea Petrescu, acknowledged the search related to suspicions of human trafficking and money laundering, with his legal team on site. Dozens of police and forensic experts combed Tate’s large property on the outskirts of Bucharest.
Andrew Tate, 37, and his brother Tristan, 36, both former kickboxers and dual British-US citizens with millions of social media followers, were arrested in 2022 near Bucharest along with two Romanian women. All four were formally indicted last year, but they have denied the charges. In April, the Bucharest Tribunal ruled that the case met the legal criteria to proceed to trial, though no start date has been set.
Following their 2022 arrest, the Tate brothers spent three months in police detention before being placed under house arrest. Their movements were later restricted first to Bucharest and Ilfov counties, then to all of Romania.
According to The New York Post, a court last month overturned an earlier decision allowing them to leave Romania, which had permitted them to travel within the EU. Andrew Tate, with 9.9 million followers on X, continues to assert that prosecutors lack evidence and that he is the target of a political conspiracy.
