From the Daily Mail: Former President Barack Obama was not pleased that former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris the day after President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race.
In his new book Retribution, ABC News’ Jonathan Karl provided new details on what had been widely known – that Obama didn’t want a quick coronation of Harris, but rather ‘a process’ to determine who would become the Democratic nominee.
The Daily Mail obtained an advanced copy.
Obama called Pelosi shortly after her endorsement of Harris became public.
‘The Obamas were not happy,’ a Pelosi confidant told Karl. ‘This person summed up Obama’s message to Pelosi as, essentially, “What the f*** did you just do?”‘
Karl wrote in the book that Obama and Pelosi had already been in ‘regular communication’ as Joe Biden appeared to be close to droping out of the race, and “they agreed Harris should not simply be handed the nomination unchallenged.”
Then, the very next day after Biden dropped out, Pelosi announced her endorsement for Harris.

Karl wrote, “The former president wanted to know what had happened. Why had Pelosi issued a statement endorsing Harris so soon? Hadn’t he and Pelosi agreed days earlier that party leaders anointing the vice president as Biden’s replacement would be a mistake?”
A senior Biden official who had also worked in the Obama White House reportedly told Karl that Obama didn’t think Harris could win.
But no other major candidates stepped forward, so five days later, the Obamas offered their endorsement for Harris as well, in a staged phone call stunt that they then posted on social media.
Earlier this week, Michelle and I called our friend @KamalaHarris. We told her we think she’ll make a fantastic President of the United States, and that she has our full support. At this critical moment for our country, we’re going to do everything we can to make sure she wins in… pic.twitter.com/0UIS0doIbA
