The political affiliation of the shooter who gunned down two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses Saturday morning is still unknown.
Vance Luther Boelter, 57, has been identified as the suspect in the shooting. In 2019 he was appointed by Minnesota’s Democrat Gov. Tim Walz to serve on the non-partisan Governor’s Workforce Development Board, according to public records. His term for the position was from December 14, 2019 through January 2, 2023.
Boelter also served on the Governor’s Workforce Development Council in 2016 under then-Gov. Mark Dayton, who was also a Democrat.
At around 2:00 a.m. Saturday, Boelter, while disguised as a police officer, went to the home of Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman, a Democrat, and his wife and shot them both, leaving them seriously wounded. About an hour later, he showed up at the home of Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman, also a Democrat, and her husband, and shot them both dead.
Just days before being assassinated, Hortman was the lone Democrat who had crossed the aisle and voted with Republicans to repeal illegal alien adults’ eligibility for the state’s low-income health insurance program.
Police said they found a “manifesto” and a hit list in Boelter’s car, with the names of multiple politicians, including Hoffman and Hortman.
According to CBS News, the list contained the names of more than 50 individuals, including officials outside of Minnesota, and including abortion rights advocates and abortion facilities.
The Daily Mail reported that the list contained “nearly 70 names.” The Daily Mail also noted one law enforcement officer told CNN that “All Democratic members of Minnesota’s Congressional delegation were reportedly on the suspect’s alleged hit list.”
ABC News provided some of the names on Boelter’s list, and most of those listed appear to be Democrats:
Those on the list included Gov. Tim Walz, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith and state Attorney General Keith Ellison, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the matter.
Police said the list — which was retrieved from the suspect’s vehicle — also named Hortman and Hoffman. Both victims are Democrats and Hortman was formerly the Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives.
The shooter’s list of potential targets also included the names of abortion providers and pro-choice activists, several sources told ABC News. Many of the Democratic lawmakers on the list have been outspoken about pro-choice policy positions, two sources said.
Authorities have identified the person of interest in the shootings of Minnesota lawmakers as 57-year-old Vance Boelter, as a manhunt remains ongoing.
