Democrats just tried to block the Trump administration from blowing the drug cartel boats out of the water. They failed, despite that two Republicans went rogue and crossed the aisle. However, one Democrats crossed over to vote with Republicans.
From The Hill: Republican Senators sunk a measure to halt the U.S. military’s strikes against alleged boats off the coast of Venezuela that President Trump’s administration argues are smuggling drugs into the country.
The resolution, spearheaded by Democratic Sens. Adam Schiff (Calif.) and Tim Kaine (Va.), failed to pass in a 48-51 vote on Wednesday.
The measure would have stopped the U.S. military from taking out vessels from Venezuela that the president argued were smuggling fentanyl into the U.S.
“And we are here today to ask our colleagues to join us in this nonpartisan vote, in this affirmation of Congress’s authority to declare war or to refuse to declare it, to authorize force, or to refuse to authorize it,” Schiff said Wednesday on the Senate floor ahead of the vote.
Two Republican senators, Rand Paul (Ky.) and Lisa Murkowski (AK) joined Democrats in voting for the measure.
One lone Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman (Pa.) crossed the aisle to vote with Republicans in opposing the measure.
So far, President Trump has reportedly authorized strikes on four boats which were allegedly carrying drugs and headed to the United States. At least 21 suspected cartel drug smugglers have been killed in the strikes.
The war powers resolution put forth by Schiff and Kaine would have required the president to seek approval from Congress before carrying out further military strikes against the cartel.
The White House had already indicated that even if the bill passed in the Senate, President Trump would veto it.
BREAKING: I just forced a vote with @SenTimKaine to block the unauthorized boat strikes in the Caribbean.
In an important step forward, the vote was bipartisan, even if it fell two votes short.
Sadly, as these strikes get worse, support will only grow for another War Powers…

Sen. Rand Paul gave a speech from the Senate floor, arguing that blowing a drug cartel boat out of the water was an act of war that requires congressional approval.
The American people do not want to be dragged into a forever war without public debate or a vote.
I took to the Senate floor to defend what the Constitution demands: deliberation before war.

However, Paul announced, “Just because I push back on @POTUS doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s the best president of our lifetime. I’d pick him every time over a socialist like Harris or a Biden who can’t even do the job. On many things, when it comes to lower taxes and less regulation, he gets it.”

Last Friday, the U.S. military blew another drug-carrying boat out of the water off the coats of Venezuela.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced:
Earlier this morning, on President Trump’s orders, I directed a lethal, kinetic strike on a narco-trafficking vessel affiliated with Designated Terrorist Organizations in the USSOUTHCOM area of responsibility. Four male narco-terrorists aboard the vessel were killed in the strike, and no U.S. forces were harmed in the operation. The strike was conducted in international waters just off the coast of Venezuela while the vessel was transporting substantial amounts of narcotics – headed to America to poison our people.
Our intelligence, without a doubt, confirmed that this vessel was trafficking narcotics, the people onboard were narco-terrorists, and they were operating on a known narco-trafficking transit route. These strikes will continue until the attacks on the American people are over!!!!

President Trump said the boat was loaded “with enough drugs to kill 25- to 50,000 people.”
