REPORT: Yale professor explains why non-White voters are leaving Democratic Party

From Fox News: On Thursday, The New York Times published an opinion piece by Dr. Daniel Martinez HoSang, a professor of American studies and political science at Yale University, analyzing how the Democratic Party has lost a sizable portion of the non-White voters that former President Barack Obama brought into the party during his eight-year tenure.

After researching and speaking with minority voters in typical Democratic strongholds like Milwaukee and the Bay Area of San Francisco, HoSang concluded that many of the non-White voters who now support President Donald Trump left the Democratic Party after becoming exhausted by identity politics and worsening economic conditions and crime.

“The rightward drift of minority voters is not a story of just one election. It is a phenomenon years in the making, one that is reshaping the American political landscape. And to understand this movement, you must understand the transformations in the places they are happening,” HoSang wrote.

In the New York Times op-ed, HoSang wrote:

For decades, the dominant assumption has been that people of color in the United States would find their natural political home within the Democratic Party, with its commitment to racial liberalism. The nation’s growing racial and ethnic diversity seemed to ensure the left’s electoral future.

HoSang noted that President Trump “nearly doubled his support among Black voters from 2020 to 2024, won some 40 percent of the Asian American vote and took almost half of the Latino vote.”

The op-ed explains that some Black voters are upset over illegal aliens being easily handed benefits, when they haven’t been treated the same.

Also, HoSang writes, “The restructuring of the U.S. economy over the last 40 years, along with the yawning inequality it has spurred, has disproportionately hurt communities of color. The Democratic-championed civil rights protections and social welfare programs that have defined the party’s appeal to nonwhite voters have proved inadequate in the face of the interconnected crises that define America now.”
